Privacy & App Information
This page supplements the general privacy policy of the Squawker platform with what is specific to the app for iOS and iPadOS, and contains the information Apple requires for the App Store.

App privacy notice
1. Controller and scope
The controller is the operator of Squawker named in the imprint. The app is a way into your Squawker account; everything you record in the app is synced with the platform and processed there according to the general privacy policy.
2. No ads, no tracking
The app contains no advertising and no third-party analytics, tracking or advertising SDKs. We don't use the advertising identifier (IDFA), don't track you across other companies' apps and websites, and don't sell any data.
3. Account and sign-in
You need a Squawker account (email address, name, username). You sign in with a password, a passkey, or Sign in with Apple or Google. With passkeys, the private key stays in your iCloud Keychain – we only store the public key.
After sign-in, the app stores a session cookie on the device. So you can see which devices are signed in from Settings, the app sends a device label such as “iPhone · iOS 18.1”.
4. Device permissions
The app only asks for permissions a feature needs, and only when you use that feature. You can revoke any permission at any time in iOS Settings.
- Location: only during a live flight you start yourself – including in the background until you report the landing. Your position is sent to the platform, shown to the contacts and groups you chose, and saved as a GPS track in your logbook.
- Motion & Fitness (barometer): for a smooth vertical speed in the glass cockpit and the recorded track. The raw data is only processed on the device.
- Camera: to photograph your paper logbook. The photo is sent to our server for text recognition and analysed with Anthropic (Claude) as a processor. It is only used for recognition and not stored; only the entries you review are created as flights.
- Notifications: for push notifications (e.g. kudos, comments, followers) via the Apple Push Notification service. For this we store your device's push token. The “good day to fly” notification is computed on the device and shown locally.
- Files: GPX and IGC files are only read when you pick them for import or open them with Squawker.
5. Data on your device
So the app works offline, it stores your flights, GPS tracks, feed, profile and images locally in the app container. Widgets read a summary through an app group on the same device. This data only leaves the device through syncing with your account and is deleted when you remove the app.
6. Services the app calls directly
For some displays the app calls public services directly. No account data is sent; for technical reasons the provider receives your IP address and the requested data:
- NOAA Aviation Weather Center (aviationweather.gov, USA): METAR and station data – the airfield's ICAO code is sent.
- Open-Meteo (Switzerland): terrain elevation to calibrate tracks and landing detection – coordinates from the track are sent.
- Esri ArcGIS World Imagery (USA): satellite imagery for the map view – the visible map area is sent.
- Apple: maps (MapKit), push notifications (APNs) and Sign in with Apple, under Apple's privacy policy.
- Google: only if you choose Sign in with Google.
7. Background activity
In the background, the app occasionally updates the app icon badge, syncs data and checks the weather for the “good day to fly” notification. It uses your location in the background only while a live flight is running.
8. Deleting your account
You can delete your account completely at any time: on the web under Settings → Account & security → Delete account. This removes your profile, flights, tracks and media unless statutory retention obligations apply. Alternatively, an email to hallo@squawker.aero from your account's address is enough.
9. Children
Squawker is aimed at pilots and student pilots, not at children under 16.
10. Your rights
You have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection, and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. You can export your data on the web under Settings. Details are in the general privacy policy.
